I recently just got a menstrual cup (after so long researching and debating with myself about it) and all I can say is: I should've gotten this sooner! I have been happily sharing this experience with some friends simply because I think this is the best invention ever (next is my epilator**). Below are the usual questions I'm faced about it and I thought to write about it for the benefit of others as well :)

But first, let me try to convince you to get one too, because of the wonderful benefits listed below:
ENVIRONMENT-FRIENDLY
Ever since I can remember, I had always wanted an alternative to using napkins and tampons, especially as I personally have a lighter flow. You can use the cup repeatedly, maybe up to three years, which would spare the environment: 4 napkins x 3 days x 12 months x 3 years = a total of 432 napkins!! That means significantly less trash in the world just for one person!!
COST-EFFICIENT
As calculated above, one cup is equivalent to approximately 432 napkins x Php 5.40 per napkin = Php 2,332.80 while a cup is only Php 1,200. Some forums even say their cups have lasted them up to 10 years, which would save you a lot more than that!
It's like MAGIC!
The greatest benefit to me, as a very sporty person, is it's like I don't even have my period when I'm using my cup. You can use it up to 12 hours at a time, and that means you won't need to see your bloody business for that long. As long as you put it on properly, zero traces of your period (aside from menstrual cramps if you're the type to get - like me) with your cup!
Here are the usual questions friends have asked me about my cup:
1. Where did you get it?
I'm not so sure if there are other local suppliers here in Manila, but I got mine from Sinaya Cup. You order it online and it's delivered to you after 3 days. They're very responsive and for more technical concerns, you can check their FAQs and even ask them directly via Facebook Messenger.
2. How big is it?
Since I have a lighter flow, I got the smaller size. Without the stem, it's about 2 inches high. Depending on how comfortable it is for you, it is advisable to trim the stem a bit if the bottom part protrudes while you're using the cup. I trimmed mine maybe about 2 lines worth.

3. How do you clean it?
Unscented oil-free soap is the recommendation for cleaning your cup between "emptying" - I use Cetaphil. Before and/or after every cycle you should also sterilize your cup by boiling it in water for 5 minutes. Be sure to watch it to avoid damaging the silicone! Always be sure your hands are clean especially before insertion.

4. Can you use it up a mountain?
Unless you have easy access to clean, running water, it is not advisable to use it up a mountain. Maybe for climbs with lots of water sources it would be okay so that you won't need to waste so much of your drinking water.
5. Won't it fall off, especially when you poop or pee?
When your cup is in place, it actually creates a suction inside. So unless the suction is broken, it shouldn't fall off in any position you may be (believe me it's quite challenging removing it as it is, so it's nothing to worry about). What's hard is when it changes position - something I experienced after riding a motorcycle for sometime. It got a bit messy :s
6. Doesn't it hurt when you insert/remove it?
Honestly, yes it can hurt. Best to make sure it's not dry when you put it on, that you follow proper instructions when handling it, and that you are in proper position when inserting/removing it - the Sinaya Cup comes with a list of instructions on how to use it. Always remember to try and "make ire" haha i.e. push down your pelvic muscles like you're giving birth!
7. Isn't it gross?
Yes especially when removing it, it can get quite messy! Just make sure to keep it upright when removing it and dispose of the contents down the toilet and flush. The most challenging thing is cleaning it in a public bathroom - this is something I'm still learning myself!
Using a menstrual cup isn't that easy, especially the first time. There was a time I was having such a hard time with it that I got frustrated and said to myself "Why the hell am I doing this anyway??" and remembered that more than anything, it's for the environment. It's a new practice and definitely takes getting used to, so let us allow ourselves the learning curve on perfecting the art of cupping!
I hope this post leaves you more curious and/or eager to try and get a cup for yourself! For any questions, don't hesitate to ask (I love talking about it!). Hoping to hear others' experiences as well :) Happy cupping!
** My epilator is a Philips Santinelle, you can get it at department stores for around Php 2700.00! I've had it for a few years now and I use it for my legs, my underarms, and my bikini line! It's the best!
This post's INSPIRATION is on: helping the environment, women empowerment, and going beyond your comfort zone!
